Each term we will read a range of texts through our English lessons, Guided Reading sessions and other wider opportunities for shared reading. Much of this will be linked to our topic learning to help increase our knowledge and understanding, while gathering ideas and vocabulary from expert writers that we can use in our own writing. We will also begin to examine the style and purpose of different types of writing, looking at its structure, sentences and use of punctuation to create effects for the reader.
Some children may be directed as a 'free reader' meaning they may select their own suitable reading materials that they should keep track of in their reading record book. On occasion, they may read with an adult in school who will give support and guidance on the books they may choose.
Some children may still be reading 'banded' reading books or be designated to choose from the 'hi-low' book selection as they continue to progress in their reading skills. These books are more carefully matched to your child's reading ability and should enable them to grow in confidence with reading before moving onto more challenging texts. They will read with adults in school on a regular basis and will receive help to select new books appropriately.
All children should have their reading book and reading record available in school with them each day. House points will be awarded weekly for children who can evidence they are reading daily.
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
