Writing
Our philosophy for teaching writing at Capel-le-Ferne Primary is to immerse the children in a text. Our teachers will choose a quality text to help teach a wide range of genres and writing strategies.
Writing is inspired by Pie Corbett's 'Talk for Writing' approach. This approach is used from Reception to Year 4.
The children are expected to plan, write, edit and improve an extended piece of writing every 2 weeks. This extended writing provides an opportunity for children to independently apply a wide range of learned skills. Children then publish their writing in an 'Extended Writing' book.
The school uses a spiral model to support writing development. This means children will revisit units each year. They consolidate and build on knowledge.
The overview at the bottom of the page shows units taught, when and the quality texts chosen that are linked to them.
Spellings are taught separately in a safeguarded session.
This is the same for handwriting which is taught every day from Reception to Year 3. After this, a judgement is made on the frequency it is taught in Y4 to Y6.
